Folk Art

Purvis Young has long been called the "angel poet" of
Miami's Overtown. He began painting in the early 1960s
as a self-taught folk artist.

Utilizing scrap plywood, paneling and lumber he tells his story, painting
what he sees and what he sees is real. This artwork is provocative
and deceptively sophisticated, the highs and lows of life are
tempered with artistic optimism and deep spiritualism.

Nationally acclaimed, his work can be found in various museums
as well as with other famous folk artist in "Self-taught Artists of
the 20th Century - An American Anthology" from the Museum of
American Folk Art in New York and published by Chronicle Books
in San Francisco.
